The Basics
Name: Roberto DaCosta
Code Name: Sunspot, Black Rook
Age: 24
Affiliation: X-Men, Hellfire Club
Mutant Characteristics:
Mutation:
Sunspot can draw energy from the Sun to give himself superhuman strength. As he absorbs solar radiation, he can generate intense heat, dark solar plasma blasts and thermal updrafts for flight. When his powers are active, Roberto's body is cloaked in darkness because all of the ambient light from his skin has been drained. Sunspot can metabolize the sunlight he absorbs to charge his muscles to increase his strength, endurance, and resilience.
Doctor Joshua of the Damocles Foundation altered Bobby's powers, allowing him to direct his bio-energy as concussive force, and later as thrust for his flights as well. Sunspot's time as a slave of Reignfire and his resultant mind-merge with Cable altered his powers again. Instead of metabolizing the solar power, he now re-channels it as different forms of heat and infrared radiation. He is also capable now of absorbing other forms of heat and light besides solar power.
Manifestations: When his powers are active, Sunspot's skin becomes black and his eyes glow like fire from the sun.
Class: 4
Character:
Personality:
Roberto, before his father's death was like many other over-achievers son's, a type A personality in the making. Multi-lingual and intelligent, he is able to fit in in most situations. Though he is angered by prejudice of all kinds, he more often than not can appear calm and easy-going. Since his father's death, he has tried to fit into the circles his father ran in. Among those are the multi-billion dollar empire he nows runs and the recently initiated version of the Hellfire Club.
Roberto is often forced to make decisions that go beyond his age and knowledge base. He can be manipulated, and has been by others such as Sage and Viper. Just how much this remains true for him remains to be seen, but as with all things Hellfire, Bobby is likely simply a very powerful pawn in some grand scheme.
Physical Description:
Roberto has caramel colored skin and short black hair. Standing at 5'11," his body is kept fit and trim due to regular exercise. His eyes are golden brown and glow like the surface of the Sun when his powers are engaged. When actively using his abilities, his the ambient light in his skin is drained completely causing his skin to look as black as his hair. This leaves only glowing orbs for eyes and a fiery orifice for a mouth. Other visual signs of his mutation are the energy trails that usher forth from his hands and the back of his head.
As a member of the Hellfire Club, Roberto favors a black or silver silk button up collared shirt, black leather pants and soft leather gloves. He completes this ensemble with a thigh length velvet coat, usually in black or deep purple and sometimes embroidered at the cuffs. His X-Men uniform is new school black resembling street clothes in a sense, with a fiery toned X across his shoulder. In civilian life, Roberto has traded in his casual beach attire, khakis and jeans for business suits. On his face he carries the weight of the business world on his shoulders as he is forced to make decisions that sometimes require far more knowledge and experience than his youth allows.
History:
Born to one of the wealthiest families in South America, Roberto was his father's pride and joy. Tutored at home from an early age, Bobby excelled during his education. As a teen-ager and with the onset of his mutation, he found himself frightened by his new abilities. This fear was soon overcome by the joys of power and with the exception that he was afraid early on that he might remain in his 'blackened' form, he quickly adapted to them. And the fact that he was a mutant. Always wary of prejudice, young DaCosta soon found a new group to champion: Mutants.
A founding member of the New Mutants, Bobby was a mainstay of the team for much of its existence. However, when his father died (killed by the External Gideon), Bobby went with Gideon, who was an old friend, to take over his father's business. Gideon, however, was looking for the next External, and thinking that it was Sunspot, had Bobby subjected to various experiments that increased his solar absorption capabilities by 3000%.
When Sunspot was liberated by X-Force, he found he had the ability to fire energy blasts from his hands. Later still, during a battle with the M.L.F., Sunspot channeled his solar energy around his body, enabling him to fly. Unfortunately, he flew into one of Locus' portal beams and was sent into the time stream. It was thought that Sunspot had an alternate persona called Reignfire who led the M.L.F., but it has become clear that they are separate entities. After Bobby flew into Locus' beam, Reignfire captured him and forged a telepathic link that made Sunspot his puppet.
When Cable forced his Askani disciplines into Sunspot to "expunge" Reignfire, he severed that link and Bobby returned to normal. As a result of Cable's actions, Bobby is now fluent in Askani and has gained finer control over his powers. He is currently so powerful that he finds it hard not to be in his blacked-out "fiery-head" state, but he can power down using the Askani methods. In the final battle with Reignfire, Bobby was possessed by his nemesis, but eventually regained control of his body, and is stronger than ever.
While his best friend Sam Guthrie (Cannonball) was with the X-Men, Bobby got closer with Sam's girlfriend Tabitha (Meltdown). Things progressed to the point where the teammates kissed, just in time for Sam to burst in and see them. This drove a wedge between the friends that hasn't really healed, although they managed to work together when Sam rejoined X-Force. Recently, Bobby was deported from the U.S. because his student visa was no longer valid since he was not a student anymore. He returned to Brazil, but was restless and found the life of a rich playboy heir boring and meaningless.
At that moment, Selene, who had usurped control of the Hellfire Club, approached Bobby and convinced him to help her stop the Deviants in the Damocles Foundation from resurrecting a Celestial Template. Bobby agreed, and met up with X-Force again during the battle. However, Selene didn't give up so easily and put Bobby through a number a illusory situations to force him to her side. Sunspot saw through all of them, so Selene and Blackheart, the new Black King, played their trump card: Juliana Sandoval. Juliana was Bobby's girlfriend before his powers manifested.
She was captured along with him by the Hellfire Club and she died to save him from being shot by a HFC goon. Blackheart told Bobby that Juliana was supposed to have lived, but someone in Processing messed up. The deal was: Bobby joins the Hellfire Club, and Juliana gets a new start in a recently deceased girl's body. Feeling that he owed his life to Juliana, Bobby had no choice but to accept, and left X-Force to become the third Black Rook.
With Sebastian Shaw's resumption of leadership of the Hellfire Club, Bobby appears to have been released from his vow. Exactly what occurred and why Shaw would let Bobby get away is still unknown. Recently, Bobby was again contacted by Shaw (and secretly by Sage) and invited to join the Lords Cardinal as the Black Rook under Shaw. Much like Sage, Roberto has maintained ties with the X-Men, though he claims that he is not a double agent, but instead plans to use his power and position in the Hellfire Club to do good works. He still believes that Xavier's dreams can come true. In spite of what some of the X-Men may think, he honestly thinks he can help further their efforts as the Black Rook.

Underneath the shade of the pavilion, Roberto looked out over the gleaming pool of water that reflected the inner courtyard of the Hellfire Club's Hong Kong branch. He'd been sent here to help stop the enslaving of mutants. At the moment, his mind was thousands of miles away. She'd been on his mind recently and he was happy to hear her voice again. He glanced around him now as he held the cell phone to his left ear. A flock of tropical birds took flight, leaving the once calm pond shimmering like diamonds in the sunlight.
"Mama, estoy haciendo bien, realmente yo estoy." He said as his fingers traced the lines of the white marble column rising up to the golden dome high above his head. She'd been ill recently. He was worried about her, but he was careful to hide any negative emotion in his voice. He lifted his fingers away from the coolness of the marble column and ran his hand through his black hair.
"No sé cuándo podré irse aquí. Tengo trabajo importante a hacer. Mama, entiende por favor. Por supuesto, usted es el más importante...," His head nodded in understanding as if she could see him. While inside, he was growing more frustrated by the minute. He took a breath to calm himself and noticed a familiar shadowed form moving out from the large archway along the rear of the colonnade. Sebastian Shaw was here.
"Mama, necesito ir. Le llamaré mañana. Te quiero, mama." He smiled at the approaching figure as he snapped the phone closed, "Buena mañana, sir...Good morning, my King."
No sooner had the phone made it's way back into his coat's pocket then it began to ring once again.
Translation:
*Mama, I am doing well, really I am.
*I don't know when I'll be able to leave here. I have important work to do. Mama, please understand. Of course, you are the most important...
*Mama, I need to go. I'll call you tomorrow. I love you, Mama.
