The Basics
Name: Cameron Chade, formerly Jesse "Cameron" Winthrop
Code Name: Scion
Age: 16
Affiliation: X-Student
Mutant Characteristics:
Mutation:
He has the ability to affect the tangeabilty of matter both organic and man-made. On the surface his powers appear to function as a sort of telekinesis but they go beyond that. Cameron can actually walk on water, lighten his own body for flight, surf on the surface of the ocean without using a surf board or propel a football through a goal post. He can alter the chemical make-up of his body to solidify himself to avoid injury or dispel bullets or knives or fists.
It is uncertain whether he will be able to affect the chemical and physical properties of other human beings but with time he will likely get there. Doing so now is out of the question, unless it happens due to some horrible accident. He cannot mentally cause such a change at this stage in his development.
At the same time he can force the air around him to become almost tactile to create shields, concussive blasts, or transform the ground beneath his feet into another form of its present state. For example, he can transform sand into glass, lump coal into a diamond or cause water to boil. As in most cases with Psions, Cam is most dangerous when out of control or angry. He may be able to alter space, time and all forms of matter itself at some point but he is most likely years from being able to do so. There is good reason that his abilities have often been mislabeled as 'telekinesis' as he can do what they do and finds those actions natural and even easy for him. This is likely due to the genetic connection he has to his father.
Manifestations: None.
Class: 4
The Character
Personality:
To put it bluntly Jesse, or Cameron as he prefers to be called, is a handful. His genetic gifts and mutation have made him cocky and self-assured. This combined with a natural athletic prowess and a teen attitude of immortality have left his elders unable to completely control him. He's not a bad kid but he has the bad habit of letting wisdom go in one ear and out the other. He has yet to really suffer anything that he hasn't been able to handle, which only adds to his feelings of superiority.
Cam has simple tastes and expectations in life. He is only beginning to grow comfortable with the fact that he is a mutant and has a long way to go before he can become a master in his abilities. He can seem cocky and over confident and in many ways he is. Blunt, but not really rude, Cam speaks his mind and generally attacks his relationships with the same zest he possesses for life. He is stubborn and strong-willed, with a determination that is rare in many his age.
The death of his mother has left him somewhat shaken, something he is still recovering from. He has tried hard to get to know his father but the fact that his dad is often traveling the world for work makes that difficult. He truly likes his dad though and enjoys the time they spend together. In many ways, Cameron tries to be like his father Wil, though he would never admit that desire.
At heart he is a good guy. He is smart and enjoys seeing if he can outsmart the authority figures in his life, from his parent to his teachers, to outrunning the highway patrol to avoid a speeding ticket. And once people get passed the outer demeanor of self-possession, he is a loyal and dedicated friend. He is good-natured and fun-loving, although he enjoys getting into trouble and taking risks. He can often be seen smiling or flashing a boyish wink. Cam is very conscious of health and fitness and plans to somehow go into a career involving fitness or health.
The child of a single parent, his mother Constance Winthrop, he was raised as the valued grandchild of a set of wealthy grand parents who didn't always agree with his mother's independence or attempts at such. As a result of watching her struggle with his grandmother and grandfather, Cam often tries to live more independently than other teens. He tries to set and live by his own rules, not knowing that he owes a lot of his potentially rebellious nature to his father Wil Chade, a man he has only recently met. His father is the reason he is a student at Xavier's.
Physical Description:
A natural born athlete, he moves with a self-assured grace that belies natural skill he then reveals on the field. Tall, well over six feet at 6'2" plus, he has dark drown hair and brown eyes. He does tan, but prefers to get his during impromptu games of football or soccer or the lawn. A good looking kid, takes after his dad in more ways than he knows. He moves with a casual confidence and easy going charm grounded in the fact that he has worked hard for every muscle, just as he has worked for everything else in his life. He wears workout wear, jeans, long cargo shorts or cut off camos. Tanks, tees and button ups round out his wardrobe.
He likes to wear one of his dad Wil's old leather jackets, bumming it from his father shortly after they met. Though his father is a little taller than him he was proud to see the jacket fit. He wears it every chance he gets and it is arguably his most prideful possession. Basically everything he wears is normal, the stuff you see in catalogs or in the windows in the mall. He carries himself in a way that says that he is happy within his own skin.
He's a hottie by any standards (and knows it), winks, grins, side ways glances, shrugs...whatever it takes to show case his own brand of charm. He can be manipulative like any charmer and he doesn't usually have any broad agenda beyond momentary satisfaction. This will change as he matures but he's a guy and so sometimes that progress is slow. He lives for fitness and working out and gets grumpy if he can't workout. He likes to flex and show off his muscles, but tries not to be too overt about it. He's proud of himself. He's worked hard.
History:
Born during a thunderstorm that left a great portion of San Diego without power for several hours. Cameron's life has reflected that stormy beginning. Born to the only daughter of wealthy grandparents, Jesse Cameron Winthrop {or Cam or Cameron (largely due to his mother's refusal to call him after the long standing family name)}, was doted on as much as his mother would allow. As such he has lived a somewhat sheltered upbringing, having gotten much of what he wanted. He has worked for everything money could not buy however.
He began working out at ten or eleven to enhance his performance in sports and natural strength. He also recognized early on that school was important so he has studied hard and approached that like everything else in his life with an air of seriousness. He has done all he can to please his parents and grandparents, at least until the onset of puberty. During his childhood there had been unexplained incidences of some outside ability within Cam that wasn't completely 'normal.' An apple or other treat might have found its way into his hands. To impress a girl he might have caught a wave he might otherwise have busted it on. He might have scored the winning touchdown or goal in an important game.
It wasn't until he reached the ripe age of fourteen that he had true manifestations of his mutant gifts. A beloved pet fell out of the family's sail boat and though the golden retriever was a capable swimmer the waves were just too rough. As the boat turned around, Cam watched in horror as the pet sank beneath the waves. Concentrating on protecting the dog and not wanting the animal to drown, the adults were amazed to find the dog stand or rather sitting licking himself within a perfectly sturdy looking open, boxed in area of water around him. Somehow the water around him had solidified or otherwise parted to keep the dog from dying.
Cameron's mother then began to suspect that she knew who the boy's father was, a young soldier she'd met and fallen for once upon a time. That soldier, Wil Chade, had been a mutant telekinetic and so she assumed their son had been given the same gifts. In spite of this revelation, Cam was never told who his father was. Having grown up a 'bastard', Cam had chosen to overcome that stigma by being popular and athletically talented - thereby giving his classmates and peers no choice but to accept him. His grasp of this new power and his own extracurricular life began to slip however as his mother grew increasingly ill.
Cam tried to deny the truth for as long as he could, simply going about his life and pretending his mother wasn't sick. He began to act out, growing increasingly rebellious and difficult to control. At least until she died. He returned home from school one afternoon to find her lying on the kitchen floor. The telephone was in her hand but help had never come for her, as she hadn't had the time to dial. Taken in by his Grand-Parents, Cam found their restrictive lifestyle not to his liking as he was no longer allowed to partake in the less prestigious activities like surfing, football or even his part time job in the mall.
They shipped him off to the same boarding school that his grandfather had attended. To be frank, Cam never really tried to fit in and succeed. They refused to call him anything but Jesse and the only recourse he could see was to rebel more than he ever had. Cam just wasn't a rich boy kind of guy. He wanted to work for what he got, like his mother had taught him. That and he missed his mother terribly.
For the first time he began to question his grandparents about his father, not believing their lack of knowledge to be the truth. Instead he rebelled further, repeatedly 'losing control' of his mutation when his anger and resentments took over. He spent a year basically being a teen-aged shit. Eventually he would runaway from home, living on the beach in Baja and surfing and busing tables for for his keep.
He still doesn't know how his father found him but one afternoon while hanging out on the beach Cam was approached by the man he would come to know as his father, a feral and a weather goddess. The younger Chade was transported to a new life on the east coast at a school for young mutants. During the few months since his arrival he has tried to turn his life around and now wants to attend college, and follow his father's footsteps as an Army Ranger. He doesn't see his dad nearly often enough but is grateful to have him in his life, in many ways the idea that he is not a bastard has evened out Cam's temperament, though he can still be hot-headed at times.

The waves were totally awesome....yesterday. Today there could only be called attempts at something a dude could climb on and make his own. Cameron squinted into the fading sun another day ending well before he would have liked. He clutched his board to his side, the muscle in his bicep flexing just above the aqua, cobalt and green flame that spread itself across the yellow board. He took a long sip of his frozen lemonade and smiled as the two girls passed him.
"I'll come by and wash dishes like I did last night, if that's cool," Cam offered to the adult behind the counter just after thanking him for the drink.
"Did you like the food last night? Not too spicy?" The generous man asked, he had seen many teens like this American come and go during his many years. He had learned due to his own negligence that if he didn't help them no one else would. He had no children of his own and Miguel had long since given up that dream. So instead he ran this beach side shack, serving up decent to food to mostly decent people. Some of them gaining free food as they passed through the one horse town. Not many offered to work for the food, much less strike up a conversation. This boy from San Diego was troubled, in that he was not unique. What set him apart was the offer to attempt to earn his meal, probably the only one he got during the day.
"It was great," there was a pause before the word great. Cam wasn't used to having to beg for food, in fact he'd never been in this position before to have to ask for anything really. His mom had always done her best to make sure he was happy and for the most part he had been. Sadness washed over his features for a brief moment before Miguel spoke once again.
"Glad to hear it, maybe you come back in an hour and I let you try something I've been thinking about adding to the menu. No need to wash dishes since you will be helping me out," Miguel said with a knowing smile.
"Sure," Cam said brightly as he took another sip of the refreshing lemonade, "Awesome."
"Right now I think you need to impress some muchachas," Miguel said with a wink as he wiped the counter clean or the gently drifting sand and salt that floated so easily on the breeze here.
Cam laughed now, something he hadn't done for a while. Spurred on to show off for the ladies, Winthrop set off toward the waves. He set down the cup, pressing the bottom into the sand next to his shirt and towel. A quick, confident nod in their direction as they giggled was all that proceeded his quick feet into the crashing waves. Even as he paddled out the waves seemed to swell around him, almost as if he was capable of gaining his heart's desire. He was used to life bending to his will, he wasn't exactly spoiled but close.
Cam stood up on the board the swells rising to points higher than they had previously that day. By now the locals had learned that when the gringo from San Diego took to the water the waves were soon much better. Soon there were a handful of other riders taking to the surf. Cam and the others had an audience. Many of them watching the scene from behind dark glasses. Not all of them, however, were there on vacation or there for the surf.
